Amsterdam International Water Week conference IWW From 1 to 3 November 2011, experts from around the world will gather in Amsterdam for the third edition of the international Aquaterra conference to discuss how to strengthen vulnerable and densely populated delta areas. In light of the expected climate change, these areas will be the first to be affected by rising sea levels, extreme river outflow, drought and reduced fresh water supplies. The development of nine specific deltas will be discussed in order to exchange knowledge and learn from one another. As no two deltas are the same and no blueprints are available, the main issue is how to strengthen river deltas to make them climate-proof while maintaining economic growth. Rivers and deltas are highly complex regions often with economically vital ports, intensive agriculture and very large cities. There is a special focus on these areas as they will be the first to be affected by the rising sea levels and altered precipitation patterns predicted to result from climate change.
